The Gillingham cement plant operated intermittently between 1874 and 1939. For details, see www.cementkilns.co.uk/cement_kiln_gillingham.html and related pages. The plant extended to the west after WWI and on this wharf a travelling crane unloaded coal to fire the rotary kiln.
