This is the Victorian era workshop that maintains the infrastructure of Bristol's Floating Harbour and is a positive treasure trove of seldom seen machinery and is of national importance as an example of its type. This huge planning machine is driven by belts and fast and loose pulleys from a Tangye steam engine. It was built by J Whitworth & Co of Manchester. Whitworth was one of the giants of machine tool development (along with Maudslay) and this is a stunning example of its period. This site is open on Heritage Open Days on occasions and is well worth a visit as visits are not usually encouraged (it is a working site not a museum).
