Residents in Westerhope launched a petition in December 2012 to give them more time to come up with a plan to save their community association, which had been targeted as part of Newcastle City Council multi-million-pound spending cuts. The facility, in Hillhead Road, has some 400 members and is used by more than 15 local clubs and groups. Formerly the Miners’ Institute Image, the facility includes an outdoor bowling green, a sports pavilion, football pitches and even an area for whippet racing.
