This is a Sykes Church, so called because between 1856 and 1913 Sir Tatton Sykes I (1772-1863) and Sir Tatton Sykes II (1826-1913) of Sledmere built, rebuilt or restored 18 churches in East Yorkshire, mostly on the Yorkshire Wolds. Sir Tatton Sykes II has been referred to as 'perhaps the greatest English church builder of the 19th century'. St Mary's is a Wolds church designed by the Gothic revival architect G.E.Street in 1873
