New, replica mileposts of the Shropshire Union style have been furnished along the Montgomery Canal. This one marks Newtown 18 miles, but it has been necessary to indicate that Newtown is not to the left of the post. The posts were designed for reading from a boat, and only one side would be visible from an approaching boat (but I don't suppose the original canal boatmen would need either distance or direction markers).
