With Drove Lane 150 metres behind the photographer this is the entrance into a section of the former airfield that still hosts a runway, that is used by the Darlfield Gliding Club. On 7 February 1983, a Vulcan (I.D. XM594) was landed here. When it touched down it became the only Vulcan aircraft to have been flown into a non-licensed airfield in the UK. This huge site, that now houses the Newark Air Museum and the Nottinghamshire & Newark Showground (the latter being visible on the right), formerly hosted civilian flying facilities and an Royal Air Force base between September 1940-July 1959.
