The line was built in the 1840s by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway to provide a link onto the Great Northern Railway at Doncaster. It was always primarily a freight link, and lost its local passenger traffic as long ago as 1948. It still carries substantial freight, essentially coal traffic to the large power stations in the area. Since 2009 however, it has been the route of Great Central Trains passenger services between London and Bradford, although these do not make local stops!
