Herbert Ashman was brought from his home town of Yeovil by his father Thomas Nathaniel Ashman in about 1854. The family firm was involved in various activities like leatherworking, curriers (leather tanning) and hose manufacture. The Bristol census for 1882 gives details of for R.H. and H. Ashman, at 2, 3 and 4, Broadmead. However, Ashman's fame rose much more due to his occupation of the office of mayor. In 1899 Queen Victoria visited the city and knighted him, thus creating Bristol's first Lord Mayor.
