On 5 December 2013, seven homes were washed into the sea by a storm surge said to have been the worst in 60 years, at the Marrams in the village of Hemsby. The homes stood on 9 metres (30 ft) high cliffs above the beach. Whereas three of the properties tumbled onto the beach four more were seriously undermined. More than 65 chalets have already been lost, with around 150 metres of dune lost in the last 20 years.
