The three houses in view have been built on the former site of Friston's windmill which blew down in a gale in 1926 (See http://www.britishpathe.com/video/old-sussex-landmark to a Pathe newsreel which filmed the aftermath). The film claims the old post mill to be 200 years old though both Yeakell & Gardner's 1778-83 map and the OS map of 1813 do not have a windmill marked for this spot though it does have another in a position to the north of modern day Gayles near the main Seaford Road. However, Friston's tithe map does have it marked in this position so it may suggest a move was made sometime in the intervening years, that of both early maps got the position wrong. The site remained empty until these houses were built in the 1970s.
