This fine establishment started out as a private residence in 1798; it was built for a wealthy mill owner John Clarke. He lavished his home to show off his fortune: the house was one of only a few in the town to feature Bath stone and also have extensive grounds of several acres. There were water features, a temple, a coach house and a walled kitchen garden. The house was sold by auction in 1920 to the local council for £1,950, and they used it for Children's Services and later as flats. The house became a hotel in 1978.
