This unexpectedly large primary school dominates the crossroads at Upton Cross. The village of Upton Cross itself is the sort of small settlement you might expect would grow up around a busy crossroads, and with a huge amount of mining activity around here in the 19th century this junction was busy. Small mining settlements were springing up all around this area in the early 19th century and Upton Cross was chosen as a convenient place to build services for the miners including a school, church and post-office.
