In its distinctive red brick and terracotta the club was built in 1897 to the designs of W Shearburn. John Newman, in his book "North East and East Kent", described the building as having "colossal bay windows and a clumsy great porch, a pompous version of Nesfield's unpompous style". The road in front is The Broadway, originally Edward Street, and at one time a section of the A249 road.
