Obtained by Northern Ireland Railways' in 1970 for cross-border passenger services, the three diesel electric locomotives of the 101 class proved unreliable and were relegated to secondary workings after arrival of the 111 class in 1980. Locomotive haulage of any kind was always rare on the Belfast - Bangor line after 1965, so it was surprising to find 101 class No. 101 "Eagle" leaving Holywood with the 16.20 from Belfast (Central) to Bangor. 101 is believed to have last worked on 23 July 1993 and was later scrapped.
