It was founded in 1865 thanks to local landowner William Temple and with a rapid public subscriptions of £2,700 it was opened on 25th September. Inside, the church features an unusually large collections of mosaics. The church of St John is allied with St Aldhem's church on Market Place. Both churches are part of the parish of Bishopstrow and Boreham.
