The gallery was opened in 1884, and was designed by Julius Chatwin. The facing stone is Bath Limestone, and red granite pillars support the front entrance. The first floor has no windows!!! (To allow more wall space for hanging pictures!) The gallery (modernised very recently) contains good displays of contemporary art, as well as Victorian and Georgian paintings.
