One of the few island platforms still extant on the Underground (characteristic of the City & South London Railway, the first deep-level tube and builder of this line). At times of crowding this design is a hazard and access to the station has to be controlled; on this particular morning, following an overnight storm most surface rail services were suspended and demand for the tube was heavy.
