The intriguingly named and understated Wooden Walls of Old England public house is on the east side of the High Street, and was, the photographer understands, until recently a Marston's outlet. This thatched property is a Grade II Listed Building. The name sounds as if it comes from the "Slug and Lettuce" brigade, but the large scale Ordnance Survey map of 1900 shows it with this name, while the 1881 Census records it as "The Wooden Walls of England" .
