Gatehouse North Bastle

Gatehouse has two bastles - North and South. They were built in the 16th or 17th century but at one point there used to be a group of five bastles in the village. The North Bastle still stands two storeys high and was reroofed in the 19th century. It has walls 1.45m thick built of large stones. Many original features have survived, including a slit window, massive timber beams and gable-end doorway.
