This road was once designated as the A1, the main road connecting London to Edinburgh; it passed through Gateshead town centre, crossed The Tyne Bridge and on through Newcastle city centre. The A1 on Tyneside has been re-routed around the western side of both Newcastle and Gateshead and this road is now designated as the A167. Gateshead's war memorial is seen at the left side of the image.
