This Farmhouse was the original Toll House controlling traffic from Preston to Lytham. The Toll Gate and Toll Road were on the other side of the building. The Toll Road became redundant in 1920 when the Lancashire County Council built and opened the 'new road' - the A584. This has subsequently been upgraded, from its junction with the A583 (Blackpool Road) and Freckleton Village into a Dual-Carriageway ... once totally de-restricted, now 50mph in some places ... see ... Image Middle Pool Stream runs alongside the farmhouse and under the A584 at the nearby and aptly named Toll House Bridge ... see ... Image Image The area around the house and bridge is, reputedly, the site where, in 1644, Sir John Meldrum*** mustered his Parliamentarians prior to attacking the King's Royalist Army situated further in-land. *** Note this name is often seen mis-spelled as Sir John Meldron
