While according to the 2011 census 59.6% of the population of the Moyle District belonged to or were brought up in the Catholic religion, the Catholic element in the Bushmills Ward amounted to only 5.8%. Bushmills may be described as archetypal Protestant, Unionist and Loyalist community.
