Grand Union Canal: Bridge Number 83 & Woolstone Winding Hole

Bridge Number 83 was once a farmers' accommodation bridge taking tracks south-west from Little Woolstone over the canal. Today it links the old village with the Springfield area of Milton Keynes. A winding hole is a deliberately widened reach of the canal that enables long narrowboats to turn through 180 degrees. Usually these are found next to old wharves where working boats might have had a reason to need to turn. This one certainly predates the development of Milton Keynes as it is shown on the Ordnance Survey large scale map of 1925.
