A design by an original architect, Charles Townsend, who also did the Bishopsgate Institute and Horniman Museum (Image]). It was built in 1898-1901. Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts elements, but the dominant feature is Romanesque - the giant arch, rather like a Norman church or cathedral. The facade is framed by curious towers. All clad in terracotta. Grade II* listed. Next door is the former public library, of 1891-92, by Potts, Son & Hennings, acquired by the gallery in 2003. Grade II listed. John Passmore Edwards, newspaper proprietor and philanthropist, stumped up most of the cash for both library and gallery.
