A stone tablet over the entrance is inscribed 'Hyde National School 1885'. National Schools were Church of England charitable foundations, the first being established in the early years of the 19th century - so this was one of the later ones. Around the country many of the original buildings survive, a good number still in use as schools. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_school_(England_and_Wales)
