'Beetles' At Port Whapple - Image #3

The remains of three largely intact 'Beetles', one partially complete and one badly damaged example lie on the rocky shore at Port Whapple, near Eggerness Point. Another two examples lie in Garlieston Bay, further south, and a superb example in Cairnhead Bay near the Isle Of Whithorn. The 'Beetles' were floating pontoons upon which roadways could be placed. They were key components of the Mulberry Harbours, trialled in Wigtownshire. The remains are encrusted with Barnacles and some concrete and reinforcing bar debris lies closeby. In this shot, the mooring points are the key focus.
