When looking along Cowley Road towards The Plain, a busy junction, 2-3 minutes walk in the distance, it is difficult not to notice this tall, odd shaped red brick building. The 'rear' of it contains no windows and perhaps this was because that elevation overlooked some stables that belonged to the pub beyond it? It appears to be being used for residential purposes now. The pub beyond it used to be called "The Elms" but it was relaunched in February 2013 as "The Big Society". In between these two buildings there is a single storey building that looks as though it might have been a public conveniences block. Finally, beyond the pub is Cowley Road Methodist Church, a Grade II-listed building with an art deco exterior. It was designed by Stephen Salter, who was influenced by the 'arts and crafts' movement of the time. It opened in 1904.
