Inscription reads 'William MacKinnon, Baronet, CIE; of Loup and Strathaird, Scotland, founder and president of the Imperial British East Africa Company, incorporated under royal charter May 1887, through whose agency British East Africa was secured to Great Britain. Born at Campbeltown, Argyllshire, 31st March 1823, died in London, 22nd June 1893'.
