The flats were completed in 1938 and funded by the Trustees of the considerable estate of Sir James Knott, Baronet (1855-1934), a shipping magnate associated with the Prince Steam Shipping Company (Prince Line). Taken from South Shields on the opposite bank of the Tyne.
