Training ship Mars was moored off here for 60 years until 1929. It was a floating reformatory school for delinquent boys. Any misbehaving young lad in Dundee was liable to be warned "Ye'll get sent tae the Mars!" The Mars had been HMS Mars, an 80-gun battleship launched in 1840. Later converted to steam, she had served as a supply carrier during the Crimean War before £4,000 was spent converting her for her new role as a reformatory training school with accommodation for up to 400 boys. The far side of the memorial is dedicated to the ex-Mars boys who lost their lives in WW2.
