A Scots baronial mansion standing in well-kept grounds at the east end of Torryburn. it was once a preparatory boarding school for boys. The 1861 Parochial Directory for Fife and Kinross states that "In addition to the Parish School, which is at Torryburn, there is, in the same village, a School under the patronage of the family of Craigflower". I believe it closed some time in the 1980s. A local man, whose mother worked in the school kitchen, told me he recalled that some of the boys were the sons of diplomats and civil servants posted overseas. He recalls times when he "persuaded" boys to part with sweets they had been sent by their relatives, agreeing with me that he must have represented the ruffian element in the village. The building has been converted to private apartments and forms the centrepiece of a wider modern housing development.
