Broader than the usual broad canal lock, at 16+ ft, perhaps to compensate for the shallow draught of the navigation so a reasonable load could be taken in the barges. De Salis in his 1904 'Bradshaw's' remarks "The navigation is remarkable as being that on which trade is habitually conducted on the smallest draught of water of any river in the country". He quotes the maximum size of vessels for the navigation at 60ft 0in long by 16ft 0in beam by 2ft 0in draught (maximum in winter 2ft 3in).
