This large recycling facility was opened in 2008 by Lawrence Recycling & Waste Management, who have been in business since April 1984. On Sunday 16th June 2013 a major fire broke out, which caused a lot of destruction. A huge black mushroom cloud rose high into the sky which could be seen for miles around. Many fire engines and firefighters attended and got the fire under control, but it was still smouldering a week later. When this picture was taken, a week later, the smoke levels had begun to increase again, and a fire engine was sent to deal with it. The smoke had got worse by the following morning when the lower part of nearby Oldington Lane looked as if it was suffering from smog. Seven months or so earlier, there had been a previous but less severe fire at the plant. See also:- Image Image Image
