Looking south from Bell Lane, just up from Smalley Dam. The land has been mined several times in the past, beginning with early bell pits, then relatively shallow open-cast mining in the 1960s and then much deeper open-cast mining in the late 1990s. Much of the surrounding countryside has been mined in the past, with more, even bigger mines planned for the future...
