Planting the Penny Hedge Whitby

The planting of the Penny Hedge is an historic event that takes place each year on the Eve of Ascension Day. It is a Penance that was set by the Abbot of Whitby in the reign of King Henry II and has been carried out ever since. The Hedge must be built at low tide and thereafter must withstand three tides.
