These are basically backwards enclosed steam generators. Electric compresses air and sends it to air receivers. Compressed air was used for rock drills (important in hardrock mines). Miners would drill up into the lode using compressed air drills. This is a 1950s compressor hall for Victory shaft. Together they could produce 110 cubic metres of air per minute at a pressure of 6 atmospheres. Alley and Maclellan Ltd. Glasgow produced all three machines.
