Both James Paine and Robert Adam worked here, but the exterior doesn't quite fulfil the promise of their stature. Still, it is imposing and impressive. Paine was executant architect, overseeing a design by James Moyser, as building began c1733 when he was only 17. A plan to build a pavilion at each corner never came to anything, but c1776 Robert Adam added a north-east wing (cut off in this photo, sorry Robert) which while characteristically refined, undermines the symmetry. Grade I listed. The house and park are in the hands of the National Trust.
