The Barr Memorial

Image is on the left, and one of the cemetery's two Martyrs' Monuments – http://www.geograph.org.uk/snippet/5514 – is on the right. At the heart of this memorial is an older stone with the following inscription: "Erected by William Barr in memory of his two Daughters both nam'd Sarah and of James Barr his Father and Margaret Stewart his Mother also of John, James and Janet Barr his Brothers and Sister who are all interred here. Janet Orr latter spouse of James Barr and Margaret Barr Daughter of John Barr also lie here". The more modern framing parts of the memorial commemorate, on the left, "William Barr of Drums, Sheriff Clerk of Renfrewshire, died 10th June 1853, aged 65 years", and, on the right, "Elizabeth Shedden Barr, daughter of John Shedden of Morrishill, Beith, and widow of William Barr of Drums, died 29th January 1869, aged 74 years". Her mother, not named on the stone, was Barbara Wilson, daughter of John Wilson (a Bailie of Kilmarnock). As for John Shedden, his father Robert had acquired the lands of Morrishill in 1748, and he later added the lands of Broadstone. John, as eldest son, succeeded to these properties [p276 of volume 1 of James Paterson's "History of the County of Ayr" (1847)].
