Grovelands Priory was previously called 'Grovelands', (and before 1850 'Woodlands'). It was purchased in 1796 by Mr Walker Gray, a Quaker brandy merchant, as 'Southgate Grove', who commenced a rebuilding programme for the house and grounds. This was continued by his nephew Captain John Donnithorne Taylor. The grounds now form a public park managed by The Southgate Urban District Council. The house became a military hospital during the 1st World War and an NHS convalescent home in 1948. Since 1985 it has been owned by the Priory Hospitals Group.
