This fine memorial was designed by Gilbert Scott and completed in 1879, a year after his death. It commemorates Edith, Lady Maud Hastings, Countess of Loudoun. She died in 1874 and was much loved by the townspeople; the Hastings family had been important in the area for hundreds of years and had held the castle from 1474 until its destruction in 1644.
