The line from Otford to Maidstone East was opened on 1st June 1874 by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway. East Malling station was opened in May 1913. The station is at a high level, adjacent to the railway bridge over the High Street. It is possibly the least attractive station on the line. The ticket office at East Malling station was closed by 1988. It was located in a wooden building on the up (London-bound) platform, where part retained as a shelter continues in use. This view is from the down platform, looking in the direction of Maidstone East.
