Colchester's main railway station, on the main line between London, Ipswich and Norwich, is a short distance to the north of the town. Colchester Town station is at the end of a short branch line but is more convenient for the town centre. The station was previously named St. Botolph's (a name which made no reference to Colchester), and was renamed to Colchester Town in 1991.
