Surely this is one of the most atmospheric youth hostels in the YHA. Ninebanks hostel is over a mile from that village, high up in the Northern Pennines near Alston. An old lead miner's hostel dating from the 17th century, it was converted to youth hostel use in 1947, rescued from closure by the two present managers in the early 1990s, and considerably revamped and modernised internally, while addressing 'green' issues in energy conservation, etc.
