Taken at the end of the coldest March weather for a hundred years. The view takes in the Cowgate and the University district. The tower of the old High School building in High School yards and the spire of St. Patrick's Church can be seen in the middle distance, left and right respectively. Beyond them stands the white block of the Appleton Tower with the David Hume Tower to the left and the domes of Old College and the McEwan Hall to the right. The wind, the wind, the wind blows high, The snow comes falling from the sky: Margaret Thomson* says she'll die For the want of the Golden City. She is handsome, she is pretty She is the girl of the golden city: She is handsome, one two three, Come and tell me who shall be! *or any other girl's name you care to think of. The words are from a traditional Edinburgh children's street game (known also in other places) and are sung by a group that goes on to guess the name of her lover.
