A large neo-Jacobean house built to the designs of David Brandon for Gathorne Hardy M.P. in 1859-62. Pevsner reports that the tender price was £18,544 and the final cost £32,988 so some things never change. In 1912 Lord Rothermere brought in Herbert Cescinsky and he altered the windows, added the battlements and made other changes so that the view here is more his than Brandon's. Grade II listed. Benenden School has been here since the 1920s. The date of the picture is uncertain.
