A plaque above the front door reads; "According to tradition Saint Edmund Arrowsmith S.J.(*) offered the sacrifice of The Mass in this house in penal times. He was captured on The Moss (**) and martyred at Lancaster on August 28th 1628." (*) Society of Jesus - or Jesuits (**) Brindle Moss - grassland nearby. It is said that Saint Edmund nearly escaped his pursuers, but his horse refused to jump a ditch allowing his captors the time to catch him up.
