As we headed south along the track these hungry ewes trailed over bleating hungrily. It is the start of spring but winter still has the upland pastures well within its grip. An icy east wind has frozen the ground and the grass is not growing - anything edible has to be brought up by the farmer. It must be a difficult year for them - a very wet year followed by an extended winter.
