A disused railway climbs steeply above Crook to Stanley Crook from where it descends the Deerness Valley to Durham. The line of the railway has now been converted into a path for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders. http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/Durham+Wildlife+Sites+-+Deerness+Valley+Railway+Path Note the barriers installed to discourage abuse by motor-cyclists.
