In this view, I have included the footpath / cycle route, which follows the trackbed of a dismantled railway line, to provide some context. The distant tunnel is shown in Image (see Image for further information), and the feature in front of its right-hand side in Image In the present photograph, the area on the right is a former quarry. It is not marked as such on present-day OS maps, but I noticed a sheer rock face at its eastern end: Image The site is annotated "Quarry" on the first-edition OS map (surveyed in 1860) and on the second-edition map (revised c.1896), but is labelled "Old quarry" on the 1914 revision of the map. It was a whinstone quarry: for example, a newspaper advertisement from 1858 about ground to feu at Bowling mentions "the Whinstone Quarry" there; likewise, Dugald Bell's 1881 book "Among the Rocks Around Glasgow" mentions "the Whinstone Quarry at the east end of Bowling". The railway line itself crossed the southern part of the quarry; some shoring up would have been required.
