Course of dismantled railway line

The curving embankment shown here was the Dalmonach Branch of the Forth and Clyde Junction Railway. The main line of that railway crossed the River Leven near here by means of Image The main line is depicted on the first-edition OS map (surveyed in 1860). However, the Dalmonach Branch, which curved away from the main line here on the east side of the river, is not shown on that map; it was a later addition. The course of the Dalmonach Branch line is shown on the second-edition OS map, which was surveyed in 1896-97. The branch line led past the Milton Works (dyeworks, centred on Image), and had some sidings there; the line continued as far the Dalmonach Works (centred on Image). The area formerly occupied by the Milton Works is to the left of the road in a picture of Image That site is now occupied by a firm of timber merchants; part of their adjacent Image can be seen in the background of the present picture, on the right. The Image have been demolished in recent years; their site is now occupied by the Image housing development (see, however, Image). The area of water to the left of the curving embankment is shown from a distance in Image, where it can be seen in front of the church.
